SFA Track & Field Supports East Texas Food Bank
Nov. 11, 2010
NACOGDOCHES, Texas - The Stephen F. Austin men's and women's track and field team is visible at all Lumberjack home football games showing. One of the ways they support the football team is by handling the game day program sales at Homer Bryce Stadium. Half of the funds raised from the sales go to support the East Texas Food Bank.
"For some time now we have tried to become involved in some way with East Texas Food Bank," said head coach Phil Olson. "Because we are not allowed to donate money directly, we decided instead to take half the proceeds we make on program sales and purchase the food directly. SFA Track and Field/Cross Country makes $.50 per program, and in the past we would use that money for a Christmas dinner or something special for our team. It makes better sense for us to spend it to feed those in our community who are hungry.
"Those who come out to watch the Lumberjacks play top notch football can also help our community at the same time. The folks at East Texas Food Bank are excited and so are we," added Olson.
The mission of the East Texas Food Bank is to reduce hunger by providing food, support and education to those in need with passion and efficiency. The Lumberjack football team returns to action Saturday when they host Southeastern Louisiana.
