HOUSTON, Texas. - The Stephen F. Austin cross country teams placed five runners in the top 25 in their first full meet of the 2011 season at the Rice Invitational Friday evening.
The women's duo of Lauren Smith and Randi Plentl led the way for the Ladyjacks in the 4,000-meter race. Smith finished second overall with a time of 13:48 and Plentl finished less than a minute behind her to take seventh with a time of 14:25.
SFA's men finished fourth as a team in the 5,000-meter run, with veteran runners Adam Saloom and Harmon McClanahan setting the pace. Saloom finished tenth overall with a time of 17:19 and McClanahan rounded out the top 25 with a time of 17:41.
"For the first true race of the season, I was pleased overall with how things went, especially with our upperclassmen," SFA head coach Cody Clark said. "On the women's side Lauren Smith and Randi Plentl each ran smart races and finished in the top 10, while on the guy's side we also got very mature races from Adam Saloom and Harmon McClanahan. Early in the year that's what we want to see from those guys. We expect them to do that each time out this year, and then for the rest of the team to eventually follow suit."
The men's team of Moses Luevano and Nathan Collier finished on each other's heels clocking a time of 17:53 and taking 31st and 32nd in the race. Meanwhile
Laurie Byrd finished 16th for the women with a time of 14:47.
Two other the SFA men finished under the 19-minute mark, including Ryan Tilotta taking 51st with a time of 18:29 and Hunter Russell, who rounded out the team, in 55th with time of 18:36.
Redshirt freshman Amanda Walters finished in 56th with a time of 16:19 on the women's side.
SFA will compete in Southland Conference Pre-Conference meet next, on Sept. 26, at the Piney Woods Country Club.
