TUSCALOOSA, Ala. - Lauren Smith finished fourth overall and Adam Saloomcrossed the line eighth overall to lead the Stephen F. Austin cross country team's on Saturday morning at the Alabama Crimson Classic on the University of Alabama campus.

Smith continued her strong 2011 season with a time of 17:27.11 over the 5,000-meter course, posting her third top-five finish of the season in three tries to open the year, coming in just four seconds back of third place and six seconds ahead of a pair of runners from Western Kentucky.

She was one of two Ladyjacks to finish in the top 15 as Randi Plentl'stime of 18:04.16 was just enough to edge a pair of SEC runners from Mississippi and Alabama by less than a second for a 14th-place finish overall.

Meanwhile, Saloom's 25:22.88 was tops for SFA on the men's side, helping put SFA in position for a fourth-place finish as a team, coming in just two points behind Mississippi and 11 points behind second-place Auburn. Moses Luevano (25:45.82) and Nathan Collier(25:50.78) finished within five seconds of one another, crossing in 22nd and 25th place, respectively on the 8,000-meter track.

Harmon McClanahan (26:08.26) and Hunter Russell(26:14.96) rounded out the SFA scoring, registering 38th and 43rd-place finishes themselves.

"The guys ran well, and competed well. The times didn't show as well as we ran and it was good to beat some good teams," SFA head coach Cody Clarksaid following the meet. "On the girl's side we really got a good showing from our top two girls, even though Lauren didn't finish quite like she wanted. In the end this was a really good step for us going into the conference meet and really a good confidence builder and we'll just get faster from here on out."

The Ladyjacks ended up eighth overall in the 14-team meet, getting a 37th-place finish from redshirt freshman Laurie Byrd (18:44.52) and an 84th-place finish from Becca Blubaugh (19:32.64). Amanda Walters(20:45.25) rounded out the scoring in 148th place, while De'Andrea Rouwtt (20:58.82) came in 153rd in her first cross country meet of the season.

On the men's side, SFA also saw Jonus Rodriguez (26:36.63) come in 59th overall, Ryan Tilotta(27:15.04) come in 79th overall.
