TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – The Stephen F. Austin men’s and women’s cross country teams finished third and eighth Friday evening at the Crimson Classic at the Harry Pritchett Running Park.

The Lumberjacks recorded a third place team finish, while the Ladyjacks finished eighth out of the 20-plus team field.

The SFA tandem of sophomore Nick Guerra (24:58.21) and freshman Anthony Gallardo (25:02.68) paced all ‘Jacks on the path, recording top 10 finishes in the 8,033-meter run. Guerra and Gallardo crossed the line within five seconds of each other to take eighth and ninth, respectively.

“The men ran a little over 8,000-meters this afternoon,” head cross country coach Cody Clark said. “To get the result we did from them was great. Nick and Anthony both ran extremely well, especially Anthony who is just a freshman. Cody Brown has continued to step it up, as he’s come a long way from last year.

“We ran a steady race, beating Rice, who is fourth in our region. I am really excited for conference. We are at a great point in the season. We had a lot of guys break their personal records, and it is a good to see them continue to improve.”

Brown (18th) finished with a time of 25:21.14. Senior Jonus Rodriguez (25:43.82) took 34th, while freshman Colby Mehmen (25:49.54) rounded out the scoresheet at 41st.

“With the women, we had three underclassmen all run good races” Clark said. “We just have to close the gap and if we do that, we will be in the right spot for conference. Overall it was a good race, just need to see us continue to improve.”

Sophomore Shelby Pesek led the women, with 28th place finish in the 5,000-meter run. The Corpus Christi, Texas, native, finished with a time of 18 minutes flat to be SFA’s lone representative in top 40.

Senior Laurie Byrd finished 42nd, with an 18:13.69 mark, followed by freshman Katrina Fite (18:22.11) at 50th.

Senior Becca Blubaugh (18:34.83) and freshman Samantha Ottoman (18:46.72) finished 62nd and 73rd, respectfully for the Ladyjacks.

SFA will be back in action on Nov. 1, when the two teams travel to Lake Charles, La., for the Southland Conference Championships.
