Track & Field Lands Seven All-SLC Academic Honors

FRISCO, Texas - Seven student-athletes on the Stephen F. Austin men’s and women’s cross country/track and field teams have been named to the 2013 Academic All-Southland Conference teams announced league officials Thursday morning.
The three Lumberjacks named to team are senior Adam Saloom (3.71 GPA, Kinesiology) and sophomores Cameron Meyer (3.07 GPA, Management) and Josh Taylor (3.34 GPA, Finance), while the Ladyjacks receiving honors are senior Kelli Hermes (3.88 GPA, Business Economics), juniors Rebecca Blubaugh (3.89 GPA, Food & Nutrition Dietetics) and Heather McPherson (4.00 GPA, Politcal Science) and sophomore Jessica Cunningham (3.94 GPA, Social Work).
Saloom was named to his third consecutive Academic All-SLC team, while McPherson and Hermes each received their second-straight honor.
To be nominated for academic all-conference honors, athletes must be at least a sophomore, have completed one full year at the institution, be a starter or significant contributor, compete in at least 50 percent of all contests, and maintain at least a 3.0 grade-point average.
All seven athletes were key in guiding SFA to a sweep of the 2013 SLC Indoor and Outdoor Track and Field titles, while Blubaugh helped the Ladyjacks record the conference track and field triple crown.
Saloom received three all-conference honors, and won the 2013 steeplechase title. Meyer posted fourth-place finishes in the pole vault at both the indoor and outdoor conference meet, while Taylor garnered third-team All-America honors as a member of the ’Jacks’ 1,600-meter relay team that won the 2013 outdoor conference title. He also posted a second-place finish in the 400-meter hurdles at the conference meet during the outdoor season.
Blubaugh scored points for the Ladyjacks in the 5,000 meters during the indoor season, while being one of the team’s leaders during its run to the cross country title. Hermes capped her career by winning the outdoor triple jump title, while earning all-conference in the event during the indoor season.
McPherson posted a top-five finish at the conference championships during the indoor season, and followed that up with all-conference honors in the event during the outdoor season, while Cunningham recorded a top-five finish in the pole vault at the indoor championships.
