Top 25 Moments of 2012-13 - No. 10
July 15, 2013
NACOGDOCHES, Texas - Now that the school year is over, and before we begin the 2013-14 academic year, SFA athletics wanted to take a look back at the Top 25 Moments from the 2012-13 season.
No. 10Moment No. 10 on the SFA Top 25 Moments of 2012-13 takes us back to late October where the Stephen F. Austin Ladyjack cross country team kicked off one of the most successful seasons for the track and field and cross country squads. The Ladyjack harriers edged out rival Sam Houston State, 58-56, claiming the 2012 Southland Conference Cross Country title in what was the closest finish at the league championships since 1994 - but it was a moment that almost never happened.
As the race moved to the latter stages, SFA wasn't in the lead, until seniors Randi Plentl and Danielle Burchett stepped into the spotlight. Following senior Lauren Smith's wire-to-wire victory, Plentl made a surge just shy of the finish line to take third overall with a time of 21:28.0. Even after Plentl's all-conference performance, it took one more late-race rally for SFA to win the title, and it would come from Burchett.
One of the best 800-meter runners in conference history, Burchett was now trying to help the Ladyjack cross country team win another title. It was Burchett's final charge that helped lock up that title. She crossed the finish line with a time of 22:27.4 to finish 15th overall, edging out Sam Houston State's Nicole Aponte by less than a second.
The Ladyjacks went on to win the SLC Track and Field Triple Crown in 2012-13, its second triple crown in the past three seasons, but it wouldn't have been possible without the late-race heroics of Plentl and Burchett.
