NACOGDOCHES, Texas - The Stephen F. Austin men’s and women’s cross country teams reported to campus Tuesday, in preparation for the upcoming 2013 season. Twenty-three players reported, including 13 newcomers.
The Lumberjacks and Ladyjacks will move into their dormitories and attend a welcome back event, before opening up practice on Wednesday, Aug. 14.
SFA head coach Cody Clark, 2012 Southland Conference women’s coach of the year, enters her third season at the helm, as he welcomes a group of 13 true freshman.
“I am excited to have everyone on campus,” Clark said. “We (the coaching staff) have high expectations on the upcoming season. We brought in a lot of young talent from the high school ranks and are ready to see what the can do at the next level.”
The men return four letterwinners, while the women return three from the 2012 season. Each team will look to replace several key standouts from last season, as the women look to repeat as SLC champions. Xavier Rodriguez and Lauren Smith each capped off their senior seasons by representing SFA in the NCAA Cross Country Championships. The ‘Jacks also the productivity of seniors Adam Saloom and Randi Plentl, who was a two-time SLC Cross Country Student-Athlete of the Year.
The women claimed their seventh league title, while the men finished third in 2012. SFA will open up the 2013 slate on Aug. 30, with the Lumberjack Opener in Nacogdoches, Texas. The opener is the lone home meet for SFA, who will also serve as host to a high school UIL meet on Sept. 15.
