NACOGDOCHES, Texas - The Stephen F. Austin cross country teams will be in action for their first full meet of the season on Saturday, taking part in one of the oldest and biggest cross country meets in the nation - the OSU Cowboy Invitational in Stillwater, Okla.
SFA has already taken part in a pair of competitions this season - the Cardinal Relays and the Rice Invitational; however, this will present a new challenge for head coach Cody Clark's squads in their first full-distance meet of the year.
"We're excited for this weekend and feel like we are in great shape to show well on both sides," Clark said. "Oklahoma State annually puts on one of the best meets in the country and we are excited to be able to race against some of the best runners in our region. Our kids have been training very hard and are ready to get back on the course."
Lauren Smith has been the headliner early in the season, winning the individual title at the Rice Invitational while Randi Plentl just missed the top 10. The Ladyjacks enter Saturday ranked 10th in the South Central Region, while the Lumberjacks, led by seniors Adam Saloom, Xavier Rodriguez and Hunter Russell enter ranked ninth on the men's side.
Twenty teams are scheduled to compete in the 8,000-meter men's race along with the Lumberjacks, while the Ladyjacks are joined by 16 more are currently on the docket on the 5,000-meter women's side. The SFA women are expected to start at 9:15 a.m. with the men scheduled for 9:45 a.m.
Four teams on the guy's side are currently ranked in the 15 in their respective regions, headlined by the host Oklahoma State Cowboys who are currently ranked as the No. 2 team in the country.
