FRISCO, Texas – Lumberjack Anthony Gallardo was named the Southland Conference Freshman of the Year, announced by league officials in conjunction with the all-conference teams Thursday afternoon.
“Anthony has done a tremendous job all season and is very deserving,” head cross-country coach Cody Clark said. “I felt like going into the conference championships he had a shot at being top freshman and got the job done on the day, I am very proud of him.
“Anthony will have a great opportunity to do well at the South Central Region next Friday. If he starts the race a little smarter, then he can do well. It will be nice to see if he can be the top freshman in the region, which I think he can.”
Gallardo is the first 'Jack to win the freshman honor since Mitch Ownbey in 2008. The native of San Antonio, Texas, finished eighth (25:27.30) in the men’s 8,000-meter run to claim second team All-SLC honors at the SLC Cross Country Champions on Nov. 1.
The freshman was one of four SFA runners to land on the all-conference teams, joined by Nick Guerra (first team), Cody Brown (second team) and Laurie Byrd (second team). Guerra (25:03.00) finished third third overall, followed by Brown (25:16.30) in sixth (25:16.30), while Byrd (21:30.90) led the Ladyjacks with a sixth place finish in the 6,000-meter run.
The top-15 finishers in each race earned All-Southland Conference honors. The top five finishers earned first-team honors, while the next five finishers were named to the second team. The 11th through 15th finishers earned honorable mention all-conference honors.
SFA will continue its season with the NCAA South Central Regional on Nov. 15, in Waco, Texas.
