Dec. 5, 2011
NACOGDOCHES, Texas - Stephen F. Austin athletes, trainers and administrative staff took part in a community project to help make sure local children have a Merry Christmas. In conjunction with the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee and the Southland Conference's 12 Days of Christmas, athletes from all SFA varsity sports, in addition to student trainers and staff members participated in Toys for Tots program.
"This is a very special time of year that our athletes look forward to every season," said Senior Woman Administrator Loree McCary. "Our athletes are always looking for ways to give back to the community and thank them for all the support they provide us. They truly have a desire to help those who are less fortunate in our community, and this is one of the ways they can do that."
Under the umbrella of the Marine Corps Reserves Toy for Tots program, Ronnie Bowser is the local director for the Nacogdoches Toys for Tots. He has overseen the growth of the local Nacogdoches program. A program that originally began in 1946, there are now approximately 230 Toys for Tots programs across the country. In 2004, Nacogdoches Toys for Tots collected 500 toys, but grew to 10,000 toys provided to 2,300 youngsters last Christmas.
The gifts were collected on campus Sunday afternoon and will be distributed to the families later this month.
