Led by Noel Trevino's four hits and Steven Hill's four RBI, the Stephen F. Austin Lumberjacks opened their home opener with an 11-1 over the Centenary Gents Tuesday afternoon at Jaycees Field. Trevino was 4-for-5 with two RBI and two runs scored while Hill was 2-for-4 with a run scored and four RBI. The Lumberjacks ended their three-game skid and moved their record to 3-7 on the year while the Gents moved to 5-7 on the season.
SFA scored first after Hill reached on a fielder's choice to shortstop with runners on the corners, sending shortstop Jeff Brewer across the plate. In the third, the Lumberjacks scored three more runs in the third inning for an early 4-0 lead.
The Gents got on the board in the top of the fifth when Teddy Saenz singled up the middle and scored on a double by Justin Darr. Darr was out at third on the play. SFA answered with another run in the bottom of the seventh when Kevin Crabtree sent his second home run of the season with a solo shot over the right field wall. Crabtree was 2-for-4 with a run scored and two RBI.
The Lumberjacks added five runs in the eighth inning to cap off the eventual final score at 11-1.
Erich Lehmann made his third start for the Lumberjacks, pitching seven complete innings and giving up only three hits and one run. He struck out four in his first win of the season. Richard Folmer and Heath Konesheck each pitched an inning of relief with Folmer striking out three and Konesheck struck out one and gave up one hit. The trio did not give up a single walk.
SFA will return to the diamond Wednesday afternoon in Houston against the Prairie View A&M Panthers at 3 p.m. The Lumberjacks will return home for a three-game series against Youngstown State Penguins.
