March 2, 2013
SAN ANTONIO, Texas – The Stephen F. Austin Lumberjack baseball team exploded for 15 hits and eight runs to fuel a seven inning outing from junior Kyle Cross in a 9-2 win Saturday afternoon on the second day of the UTSA Classic at Wolff Stadium.
Nine different players recorded a hit for SFA (3-5), highlighted by homers from Max Lamantia and Zach Benson. Lamantia finished three-for-four with a triple, RBI, three runs scored and a walk, while Benson went two-for-five with two RBI and run scored. Jordan Camel and Joseph Olson also recorded multi-hit performances in the win. Camel finished three-for-four with a double, three RBI and a run scored, while Olsen added two singles and two runs scored.
Cross (1-1) picked up his first win of the season, keeping UNO (0-2) off balance for seven innings. The Pearland, Texas, native recorded three strikeouts and scattered eight hits while toeing the rubber for the 'Jacks. Relievers Brett Higginbotham, Justin Hunsaker and Cody Priest, combined to pitch the final two innings.
After a scoreless first from either team, SFA jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the top of the second on a sac fly from Jackson Hood and single from Camel. Lamantia and Olsen singled to open up the inning before advancing to second and third on a sac bunt from Gevon Jackson. Hood delivered Lamantia on a sac fly to center field, before Olsen scored on a single to right field from Camel. Matthew Dickey also singled in the inning.
Cross retired the side in the bottom of the third to quickly send the ‘Jacks back to the plate. SFA added four runs on four hits to stake itself out to a 6-0 lead in the top of the fourth. Similar to the inning before, Olson and Jackson singled to open the inning. After a sac bunt from Hood put two ‘Jacks in scoring position, Camel doubled to the left field wall to bring both base runners in to make it 4-0 in favor of SFA. Following a pitching change that brought in Josh Bullock for Maverick starter Cory Buckley (0-1), Benson deposited the second pitch from the reliever to make it 6-0. The 'Jacks recorded their fifth and final hit of the inning on a Freddy Villalobos single, before Hunter Dozier grounded out to third base to end the inning. Jackson’s single was hit first hit of the season.
The Mavericks scored their first run of the game in the bottom of the frame, taking advantage of two singles and a hit batsman to load the bases with no outs. Following an infield fly, UNO plated Cole Gruber on a Caleb Palensky sac fly, before Cross struck out Brett Miller to end the inning.
Lamantia quickly gave SFA back its six-run lead, knocking his first home run of the season over the left-center wall to lead off the fifth. Hood kept things going for the ‘Jacks, peppering the left field wall for triple, before scoring on a wild pitch.
The 'Jacks added one more run in the top of the ninth, when Lamantia, who lead off the inning with a triple, scored on an RBI single from Rene Moreda.
The Mavericks scored one final run in the bottom of the ninth, on a bases loaded hit by pitch, before Priest got UNO right fielder Ryan Keele to fly out to end the game.
SFA will close out the tournament Sunday, Mar. 3, with a lone game against host Texas-San Antonio at 4 p.m.
