SAN ANTONIO, Texas – The Stephen F. Austin Lumberjack pitching staff was unable to stop a 13-run 16-hit attack, falling 13-3 to the Texas-San Antonio Roadrunners Sunday night on the closing game of the UTSA Classic at Wolff Stadium.

SFA (3-6) was lead at the plate by Mackenzie Handel, who finished two-for-two with a home run, double, two RBI and a run scored. The Arizona native was one of two ‘Jack batters to have a multi-hit performance, joined by Zach Benson, who finished with a pair of singles in a two-for-two showing.

Cameron Gann (0-2) took the loss surrendering eight runs (seven earned) across two and a third innings pitched. Chris Hassold navigated a scoreless eighth in his second appearance of the season. Relievers Garrett Powell, Blake Rhodes and Cory Maltz also pitched against UTSA (9-3).

SFA wasted no time, picking up where their 15 hits left off Saturday, taking an early 2-0 lead on a two-run home run from Handel. With one out, Freddy Villalobos singled into center field before coming around to score on Handel’s second homer of the season.

However, the Roadrunners responded with a four-run, four-hit first to take a 4-2 lead in the bottom of the frame. Riley Good singled through the right side, before Daniel Rockett doubled and R.J. Perucki walked to load the bases with no outs. The ‘Jacks made consecutive plays at the plate to keep UTSA off the board, before John Bormann doubled off the left field wall to bring three in. Bormann scored one batter later on a single up the middle from Tony Ramirez, before Rodney Garza flew out to Villalobos to end the inning.

SFA stranded two base runners in its next two trips to the plate, before UTSA added five runs in the bottom of the third to stake itself out to a 9-2 lead. The Roadrunners took advantage of a leadoff walk and a ‘Jack error, adding to four hits, as six UTSA batters reached base in the frame.

Jordan Camel singled to score Matthew Dickey to make it 9-3 in the top of the fourth. Dickey came in to pinch run for Sanchez following a fielder’s choice.

The Roadrunners recorded three consecutive singles through the right side, to take a 10-3 advantage in the bottom of the fourth.

UTSA added two runs in the sixth and one in the seventh to the 13-3 win.

SFA will have one day off before getting back on the bus for two games Baton Rouge. X squares off with fourth-ranked Louisiana State on Tuesday, Mar. 5, at 6:30 p.m., before playing Sacred Heart at 1:00 p.m. on Wednesday. Both games are at Alex ox Stadium.
