Schrom strikes out a career-high 10 batters
March 9, 2007
Jared Schrom went the distance for the Stephen F. Lumberjacks Friday afternoon, striking out 10 Texas-Pan American Broncs Friday afternoon in SFA's 7-0 win. Schrom earned his second win of the season in SFA's fifth-straight win at Jaycees Field. UTPA falls to 9-14 on the year.
The 10 strikeouts are the most thrown by a Lumberjack starter this season, and was just one away from the career high set last season by Brian Steinocher. He also held the Broncs to only three hits on the afternoon and allowed only two walks. The Portland, Texas, native now leads SFA's starting rotation with a 1.32 ERA.
The Lumberjacks scored early after Jeff Brewer led off with a single to left center in the bottom of the first inning. After stealing second, Brewer crossed the plate on a left field base hit from Kevin Crabtree.
In the third inning, SFA added on to its lead when Chris Smith scored on a fielder's choice to shortstop hit by Brewer.
The Lumberjacks scored their final five runs in the bottom of the seventh. With one out, Crabtree reached on a single hit through the left side and advanced to second on a wild pitch. After Jared Pitts was awarded a base on balls, he was out at second when Jeremy Arterburn hit a fielder's choice to shortstop, but runners on the corners. Arterburn stole second base, allowing Crabtree to score on the catcher's throw to second. Justin Long hit an RBI single to left field, advancing to second on the throw home. With Zach Gardner, pinch running for Long, on second base, Smith hit a single to right field to score the runner. Kevin Croft then hit his first home run of the year over the left field wall to give the Lumberjacks a 7-0 lead.
Crabtree was the only Lumberjack to collect more than on hit, going 2-for-4 with an RBI and a run scored.
SFA and the Broncs will face each other in Game 2 of the three-game set Saturday afternoon at 1 p.m. from Jaycees Field.
