NACOGDOCHES, Texas – A Max Lamantia three-run home run in the bottom of the sixth inning proved to be the turning point in the game, as the Stephen F. Austin Lumberjack baseball team went on to win 8-3 over Grambling State to sweep the home-and-home series Wednesday night at Jaycees Field.

The homer made a winner of Kevin Bishop (2-0), who held GSU (4-12) to two runs, one earned, across six innings for SFA (8-8). The College Station, Texas, native picked up his second win of the season, scattering six hits and recording a career-high five strikeouts, while not issuing a walk in the game.

Cory Maltz picked up his first save of the season, as he held the Tigers scoreless, recording a season-high six strikeouts, across three innings in relief for the ‘Jacks.

Lamantia paced SFA at the plate, collecting three hits to fuel a career-high five RBI on the night. The Flower Mound, Texas, native finished three-for-four, with a single, double and home run, while adding two runs scored. Hunter Dozier also finished three-for-four, with two singles and a double. Dozier recorded one RBI, while adding two runs scored and a stolen base in his time on the base path.

In all, seven of the different ‘Jack batters recorded a hit in the win.

After two silent plate appearances from either team in the opening frames, GSU capitalized on a leadoff double from Edwin Drexler to take a 1-0 lead in the top of the third. With no outs, a sac bunt from Desmond Stegall put Drexler on third, before coming around to score on a single up the middle from Juan Bueno.

SFA responded in the bottom of the fourth on a RBI single from Lamantia to tie the game 1-1. With one out, Dozier singled through the right side. After stealing second for his team-leading sixth stolen base of the season, Dozier advanced to third on a sac fly from Jordon Lenaburg, before coming home on Lamantia’s single.

Hector Mejias gave Grambling back the lead in the top the sixth, doubling down the right field line to score Brandon Kiser from second. Kiser reached first infield error to open the inning.

A four-run, four-hit sixth, highlighted by Lamantia’s second home run of the season, gave the ‘Jacks a 5-2 lead, their first of the night. Following a Tiger pitching change, bringing in T.J. Murphy (1-1) for starter Brock Baker, Freddy Villalobos executed a bunt single and Dozier doubled down the left field line to put two on for SFA to open the bottom frame. Lenaburg delivered Villalobos on a single to right field, prompting GSU to again go to the bullpen. With runners at the corners Lamantia blasted the second pitch seen from Armando Manrrique over the center field wall to clear the bases.

From there, Maltz held the Tigers to one run, as the ‘Jacks added one run in the seventh and two in the eighth to arrive at the 8-3 final.

SFA will enjoy one day off, before embarking on a seven-game road stretch. The ‘Jacks next travel to Louisiana Tech for a weekend series in Ruston Mar. 15-17.
