LUBBOCK, Texas - After a delayed start due to high winds in Lubbock, the Stephen F. Austin Lumberjack baseball team took a 1-0 lead before eventually falling 20-4 to No. 25 Texas Tech on Tuesday night at Dan Law Field at Rip Griffin Park.
SFA (8-10) and the Red Raiders (17-5) were delayed 2:30 due to high winds that reached upwards of 40 mph.
Senior Mackenzie Handel highlighted the night for the `Jacks, belting his third homer run of the season in a 1-for-4 performance with two RBI and a run scored. SFA recorded eight hits in all, with sophomore Matthew Dickey and freshman Conner Fikes accounting for four between the two of them. Dickey and Fikes each finished 2-for-4, with Dickey scoring once.
Senior Gevon Jackson finished 1-for-4 with a double and RBI, while junior Dan O'Neil added a run scored in a 1-for 3 showing in the box.
Freshman Patrick Ledet (0-1) suffered his first loss of the season, allowing six runs (three earned), across three innings pitched.
The `Jacks struck first, scratching one across in the opening frame to take a 1-0 lead, TTU answered with six straight runs, including five in the bottom of the first, before the `Jacks threatened to pull back within contention.
In the top of the fourth, Handel pulled SFA within three runs with his homer over the right field wall. The Red Raiders answered however with one run in the bottom frame and added 13 more the rest of the way to put the game out of reach.
The `Jacks will close their series with TTU on Wednesday, in a 2:00 p.m. scheduled start. SFA will send senior righty Kyle Cross to the mound opposite Red Raider lefty Dylan Dusek.
