NACOGDOCHES, Texas - Cameron Gann struck out three and did not walk a batter, going the distance in his first weekend start of his career in a complete-game effort as part of a 4-1 Stephen F. Austin win over UTSA in the series opener on Friday at Jaycees Field.

Gann, who had made just one other start earlier this season, moved to 2-0 on the year and scattered just six hits and joined Brett Higginbotham as the only two Lumberjacks (8-13, 3-4 SLC) this season to have tossed complete games. A freshman from Crandall, Gann needed just 94 pitches to navigate through the UTSA (10-12, 2-5 SLC) lineup, firing 59 for strikes and getting 17 of his 27 outs in the air.

"That was exactly the start we needed from him (Gann)," head coach Johnny Cardenas said following the win. "He threw quality strikes and got good defense behind him. We felt like we needed to change something up this weekend in the rotation and this is just what we were hoping to find."

Freddy Villalobos and Max Lamantia each had a pair of hits for SFA, who got all of their runs in the second inning off of UTSA starter Casey Selsor, who also went the distance for the `Runners. He fell to 3-3 on the season after allowing seven hits and four runs, walking three and fanning two in his eight innings of work.

The `Jacks got a balanced effort from its lineup as eight of their nine starters managed to reach base at least once on the afternoon.

SFA gave Gann all the cushion he would need in the second inning when it exploded for four runs off of Selsor. The first two Lumberjacks of the inning reached base before Jarid Scarafiotti put SFA out in front with a double off the left-field fence. Two batters later Freddy Villalobos added two more when he shot a double into the left-center field gap that scored Scarafiotti and Max Lamantia. Two batters later Zach Benson scored Bobby Loveless on a sacrifice fly, giving Gann a 4-0 lead to work with.

The freshman gave one run back in the third when Daniel Rockett delivered a two-out RBI single to score John Welborn; however, that was all the `Runners would be able to muster for the remainder of the afternoon.

Despite Selsor settling down himself to allow just two hits in the final six innings, it was Gann who stole the show, retiring 13 of the final 14 hitters he faced and only allowing a runner to reach as far as second base twice the rest of the way.

The `Jacks will go for another win over UTSA on Saturday at 2:00 p.m. when they face the `Runners in the second game of the series. Cody Priest is slated to get his first start of the season, while right-hander Justin Anderson is scheduled to start for UTSA.
