Solid Pitching Helps SFA Pocket Trojans
April 1, 2014
LITTLE ROCK, Ark. – Behind strong pitching and early runs, the Stephen F. Austin Lumberjack baseball team downed Arkansas-Little Rock 3-1 on Tuesday night at Gary Hogan Field.
Freshman Jarred Greene (2-1) picked up the win for SFA (13-14), logging two scoreless innings in relief of starter Halden Maynard. Greene, a native of Pasadena, Texas, surrendered just one hit and recorded two strikeouts against the Trojans (11-14). Junior Josh Keith pitched the final three innings to pick up the first save of his career.
Senior Mackenzie Handel led the way for the ‘Jacks with a 2-for-3 night. Handel, who hits his team-leading seventh homerun of the season and a single, accounted for two of SFA’s three runs scored with an RBI and run scored.
In what would later prove to be a pitchers duel, the ‘Jacks tagged UALR starter Chad Bradford (2-1) for one run in both the first and second innings to take a 2-0 lead on the Trojans. After a foul out on the opening pitch of the game, freshman Brandon Smith singled to left field and was followed by Handel, who singled to right field, to put runners at the corners, before coming in on a wild pitch.
In the second, SFA again put two runners on with consecutive singles, before freshman Nick Ramos, who led off the inning, advanced to third on a foul out. Ramos scored one batter on a single up the middle from sophomore Kyle Thornell.
After UALR plated one in the bottom of the fourth, before Handel gave the ‘Jacks back their two-run edge on a solo-shot over the right field wall to open the eighth innings and make it 3-1.
SFA will closeout its road swing with a three-game series at Texas A&M - Corpus Christi, beginning April 4.
