CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas - The Stephen F. Austin Lumberjack baseball team scored two runs in the eighth to tie the game, before surrendering one run in the bottom frame to fall 9-8 to Texas A&M - Corpus Christi on Friday night in the series opener at Chapman Field.
SFA (13-15, 4-6 SLC) outhit the Islanders (17-15, 7-3 SLC) 15-10 across the game, but the `Jacks were victimized by a long inning in the sixth in which they surrendered four runs and two errors to force the team to rally.
Senior Mackenzie Handel belted his eighth homerun of the season, going 3-for-5 with four RBI and a run scored. Freshman Nick Ramos led the team, going 4-for-5 with an RBI and a run scored. Seniors Ricardo Sanchez and Brett Thornell each turned in two-hit performances.
After a scoreless opening frame from both teams, TAMUCC tacked on two runs in the bottom of the second to take a 2-0 lead. SFA responded in its next trip to the plate to tie the game in the top of the third. With two outs and one on, Sanchez singled through the left side before advancing around to score on Handel's double to right center.
In the top of the sixth freshmen Conner Fikes and Ramos singled, before Thornell delivered Fikes on an infield single. The `Jacks then added two more one batter later, as junior Dan O'Neill doubled to left center.
However, the Islanders plated four runs in the bottom frame to take an 8-5 lead. SFA rallied, scoring three runs across the seventh and eighth to tie the game, to tie it 8-8, but TAMUCC added on one to hold off the rally.
The `Jacks will look to even the series on Saturday. SFA will send junior Dillon Mangham to the mound in a 5:00 p.m. start.
