NATCHITOCHES, La. -
Down 7-1 heading into the top of the seventh inning, the Stephen F. Austin Lumberjacks scored three runs in each the seventh and eighth before putting together a six-run ninth to defeat the Northwestern State Demons, 13-8, Saturday afternoon. Noel Trevino hit two home runs and Steven Hill hit a solo shot to lead SFA to its sixth win in seven games. The Lumberjacks are 18-15 overall and have a Southland Conference mark of 6-5. Northwestern State is 14-18 overall and is 4-6 in league play.
Hill's solo shot came in the top of the fifth inning when the Lumberjacks were down 3-0. It was his 11th home run of the year. The Demons scored four runs in the next two innings to go up 7-1.
In the top of the seventh, Trevino hit a three-run shot to clear the bases and put SFA within three. He hit his next home run of the game in the top of the eighth, a two-run shot, which was part of another SFA three-run inning to tie the game at seven apiece.
The Demons put another run on the board to take an 8-7 lead, but SFA added six runs in the top of the ninth to take the 13-8 lead.
At the plate, Kevin Crabtree had four hits and scored a run. Trevino took seven RBI off a double and two home runs. He also scored three runs.
Lumberjack starter Jared Schrom pitched 4.2 innings, giving up four hits and four runs. He walked five and struck out five. After appearances from Lance Luetge and David Miller, Richard Folmer finished the game for SFA, pitching two innings and giving up two hits and only one run. He struck out three batters and walked two. Folmer earned his first win of the season for a 1-0 mark.
SFA had 21 hits in the game, including 15 in the last three innings.
The Lumberjacks and Demons will play the rubber game Saturday at 1 p.m. from Brown-Stroud Field in Natchitoches, La.
