SFA Edges Islanders In Sunday Thriller
April 6, 2014
CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas – Senior Ricardo Sanchez pushed the Stephen F. Austin Lumberjack baseball team over Texas A&M – Corpus Christi, delivering the game-winning run on a RBI single in the top of the ninth, in a 7-6 win to claim the series 2-1 on Sunday afternoon at Chapman Field.
With two outs, Sanchez delivered freshman Matthew Dickey on a single to left field to put SFA (15-15, 6-6 SLC) on top. Dickey singled in the infield and stole second base with one out, before advancing to third base on a passed ball following a strikeout.
In another offensive slugfest between the ‘Jacks and TAMUCC (17-17, 7-5 SLC), the two teams combined for 34 hits with Sanchez and freshman Nick Ramos both collecting four hits for the ‘Jacks. Sanchez, who finished 4-for-6, picked up two doubles and a single, before collecting his lone RBI of the game with his base-knock in the ninth. Ramos finished 4-for-5 with two RBI and a run scored.
Junior Josh Keith (1-0) picked up his first win and decision of the season, logging the final four outs of the game out of the bullpen. Keith pitched an inning and a third of scoreless relief in four batters faced.
SFA tacked on one run in both the second and third innings, with junior Kyle Thornell and Ramos each driving in runs on singles.
The 2-0 lead held, as starter Kevin Bishop (no decision) held the Islanders scoreless across the first five innings.
In the top of the sixth, Kyle Thornell reached base to open the frame on a hit by pitch. Dickey then advanced Thornell to second base on a sac bunt, before Cruz drove him in on a single up the middle. The ‘Jacks rattled off two more singles in consecutive at bats to plate their second run of the inning and take a 4-0 lead.
After the Islanders answered with four runs in the bottom of the sixth, both teams traded a pair of runs in the eighth to set the stage for the ninth.
SFA will now return home and begin a five-game homestand at Jaycees Field. The ‘Jacks will host New Mexico for two games on consecutive day, beginning April 8, before taking on Oral Roberts in SLC play in a three-game series starting on April 11.
