Jarid Scarafiotti hit the game-winning two-run single in the seventh inning on Friday at UTSA.
April 9, 2010
SAN ANTONIO, Texas - Jarid Scarafiotti delivered a two-run single in the top of the seventh and the SFA pitching staff struck out a season-high 13 hitters in a 4-2 win over UTSA at Roadrunner Field, snapping a 10-game losing streak for the `Jacks in San Antonio dating back to 1993.
The last time the `Jacks (20-9, 8-4 Southland) won in San Antonio was April 18, 1993, with the `Runners (12-16, 3-10 Southland) having swept each of the two series' played in the Alamo City since 2006; however, Friday was a different story as the `Jacks never trailed and pounded out 10 hits against two UTSA pitchers.
Tyler Herriage moved to 5-2 on the year after striking out eight hitters and walking just three in six innings of work, before giving way to Cory Ochs and Jason West who combined to strike out five hitters in three shutout innings. Three of those punchouts went to Ochs in two frames of work, while the last two were from West in a scoreless ninth that resulted in his sixth save of the season.
Casey Selsor fell to 4-3 for the `Runners despite pitching a solid game with a career-best seven strikeouts in 6.2 innings.
Only two SFA hitters finished with multiple hits, but every Lumberjack starter managed to reach base at least once. Tanner Hines managed to extend his hit streak to 18 games - just one shy of his own school record - with a 2-for-5 day, and Jordan Lewis also finished with a pair of hits and an RBI to lead the SFA offense.
An RBI single from Lewis with two outs in the second plated Bobby Loveless to give the `Jacks a 1-0 lead, and one inning later Darren Crabtree made it 2-0 with a single that scored Tanner Hines from second after a one-out double.
But after Herriage struck out his fifth batter of the game to lead off the third, Tyler Carpenter and Daniel Rockett struck for back-to-back solo home runs to left field that quickly knotted things up at 2-2.
The pitchers then dueled back and forth for the next three frames, with Herriage pitching out of a pair of jams before the `Jacks finally came through in the seventh. Lewis led off with a single to center before SFA loaded them up with a one out walk to Garrett Smith and a single from Hines. Selsor then got pinch hitter Patrick Gratzke to go down on strikes before Scarafiotti lined an 0-1 pitch into left field that plated a pair of runs to give SFA a 4-2 lead.
Ochs then came in out of the pen and got the `Runners in order in the seventh before pitching around a pair of errors in the eighth to keep UTSA off the board. West then followed with a scoreless ninth, striking out Jake Wood and pinch hitter Brett Aguilar for the final two outs of the night.
SFA and UTSA continue their series on Saturday at 2:00 p.m. with Jared West slated to battle UTSA lefty Matt Crocker in the matinee.
