Islanders Kick Off Series With 11-2 Win Over SFA
April 11, 2008
NACOGDOCHES, Texas - Sean Meyers mashed his second home run of the season, but the Texas A&M-Corpus Christi Islanders pounded out used 15 hits and nine walks by SFA pitchers to take a 11-2 win over the `Jacks on Friday at Jaycees Field.
SFA (14-18, 3-9) had won three of its last four games overall, while the win for TAMUCC breaks a 14-game road losing streak. The Islanders had been 1-17 overall on the road.
Meyers hammered a two-run home run in the fifth inning off of Islander starter Omar Gutierrez for SFA's only runs, plating Kevin Crabtree who had singled one batter earlier; however, it was far too little too late as TAMUCC was already up 8-0 after a five-run third inning opened things up. Kevin Crabtree also had a pair of hits on the day, including his fourth triple of the year in the eighth.
Lance Luetge took the loss for the `Jacks, dropping to 4-4 on the year, after allowing six runs in three-plus innings. He had allowed only one base runner in the first two frames before the Islanders exploded for five runs in the third inning, all with two outs. The big hit was from freshman Trey Hernandez who got three of his game-high five RBI on a bases loaded double into the left-field gap to make the score 3-0 at the time.
TAMUCC added another run in the fourth on an RBI double by Brycen Bell, and another pair in the fifth to push the lead to 8-0 before Meyers answered with his shot in the bottom of the inning.
The Islanders and `Jacks continue their series on Saturday with a 2:00 p.m. start from Jaycees Field. Lufkin freshman Jeremy Tamez is slated to start for the `Jacks, opposed by freshman Trey Hernandez for the Islanders. The game can be heard live on KSFA 860 AM.
