NACOGDOCHES, Texas - The Stephen F. Austin Lumberjack baseball team fell 11-1 to Oral Roberts in seven innings on Friday night at Jaycees Field.
SFA (15-18, 6-7 SLC) dropped its first mercy-rule game since the series finale against Sam Houston (Mar. 30) in the 2013 season.
ORU (17-16, 5-8 SLC) held the `Jacks to one run on eight hits, their lowest scoring performance in Southland Conference play.
Freshman Conner Fikes and Nick Ramos accounted for four of SFA's hits, each turning in 2-for-3 performances against Golden Eagle starter Guillermo Trujillo (2-2), who tossed a complete game. Ramos scored the lone run for the `Jacks on a RBI single from freshman Will Vest in the bottom of the sixth.
Junior Kyle Thornell went 1-for-3 with a double, while sophomore Matthew Dickey, who went 1-for-3 and reached on a error, stole his 10th and 11th bases of the season.
Junior Cameron Gann (4-1) took his first loss of the year, allowing six runs in four and two-thirds innings pitched.
ORU scored three runs in both the third and fifth innings to take a 6-0 lead on SFA, before tacking on one in the top of the sixth. The `Jacks then scored their only run on Vest's two-out single, before the Golden Eagles responded with four runs in the top of the seventh to call the game early.
SFA will look to bounce back and even the series in a 2:00 p.m. first pitch on Saturday. The `Jacks will send junior Dillon Mangham up against ORU's Gavin Glanz.
