NACOGDOCHES, Texas – The Stephen F. Austin Lumberjack baseball team was held to just three hits, as Oral Roberts picked up a 4-0 shutout to complete the series sweep on Sunday afternoon on Jaycees Field.
Seniors Mackenzie Handel, Zach Marberry and Ricardo Sanchez, each singled for SFA (15-20, 6-9 SLC) in the loss to the Golden Eagles (19-16, 7-8 SLC). The shutout is the team's first since Mar. 9.
Senior Kevin Bishop (1-4) took the hard-luck loss, being tagged for three unearned runs across five innings. The native of College Station, Texas, scattered six hits and two walks, while recording three strikeouts.
ORU’s Pepe Gomez (5-3) surrendered all three of the hits to the ‘Jacks in the win, as he combined with Kyler Stout and Jordan Romano for the shutout. Gomez struck out four in seven innings, while Romano recorded the final out of the game to pick up his ninth save of the season.
After a scoreless opening frame from both teams, the Golden Eagles scored three unearned runs in the top of the second to take a 3-0 lead on SFA. With one out and runners at the corners, ORU’s Matt Brandy scored on an error at home plate on a sacrifice bunt. The Golden Eagles then followed with another sacrifice bunt to put two runners in scoring position, before both came in on a single to center field.
The 3-0 lead would then span the next six innings, before ORU added one in the ninth to take the 4-0 final.
The ‘Jacks, looking to snap a five-game losing streak, will next take the road for four games. SFA will play at Arkansas on April 15, before heading to Abilene Christian for a three-game Southland Conference series, the first-ever meetings between the two teams.
