Jared Schrom gave up two runs off seven hits in seven innings of play to take his third win of the season as the Stephen F. Austin Lumberjacks defeated the Texas A&M-Corpus Christi Islanders, 6-3, Saturday afternoon from Fairgrounds Field in Robstown, Texas. Schrom also struck out seven in SFA's 19th win of the season to move its season record to 19-18 on the year and even its Southland Conference record at 7-7. TAMUCC fell to 21-17 overall and are also 7-7 in league play.
Neither team crossed the dish through the first three innings of play, and the Lumberjacks were the first on the board when Kevin Crabtree scored from first on a double from Christ Smith. Smith then crossed the plate when Jeff Brewer hit an infield single to give SFA the 2-0 lead.
TAMUCC added a run in the bottom of the fifth and the Lumberjacks tacked on one more in the top of the sixth. SFA took a 5-1 lead in the top of the seventh and Islanders cut the lead to 5-2 in the bottom half of the same inning.
In the eighth inning, Brewer added an insurance run to the Lumberjacks' line with his second home run of the year - a solo shot down the right field line. The Islanders added another run in the bottom of the eighth, but it wasn't enough as the final score stood at 6-3.
Brewer was 3-for-4 from the plate and had two RBI and scored two runs. Noel Trevino had two hits and an RBI.
SFA will face the Islanders in the rubber game Sunday at 1 p.m. from Fairgrounds Field in Robstown, Texas.
