FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. - The Stephen F. Austin Lumberjack baseball team fell 7-2 to Arkansas on Tuesday night at Baum Stadium.
SFA (15-21) recorded eight hits against the Razorbacks (23-15), as three Lumberjacks recording multi-hit games. Seniors Mackenzie Handel and Ricardo Sanchez joined sophomore Matthew Dickey with two hits apiece. Handel, who finished 2-for-3, was the only SFA player to record an extra-base hit with a double.
Junior Halden Maynard (0-2) took his second loss of the season, surrendering six runs (three earned) in five innings pitched. Maynard, a native of Brenham, Texas, was taxed for eight hits, issuing just two walks, in 23 batters faced.
After Arkansas scored one run in the bottom of the first inning, the Razorbacks then staked themselves out front 3-0 with two more runs scored in their next trip to the plate. Arkansas' Eric Fisher singled up the middle and Bobby Wernes singled in the infield to put two runners on with no outs in the bottom of the second. Jake Wise then moved both runners into scoring position with a sacrifice bunt, before the pair came in on a double to left field from Michael Bernal.
The `Jacks responded in the top of the third with two runs, before the Razorbacks tacked on four runs and shutout SFA the rest of the way. The lone scoring inning came as both Handel and freshman Conner Fikes each drove in runs. Dickey opened the frame with a single to center field, before Sanchez followed with a single through the left side. With two on, Handel doubled down the right field line to plate Dickey. Fikes then reached on a fielder's choice one batter later, as Sanchez scored on the play.
The `Jacks will now head on to Abilene Christian for a three-game series in their return to Southland Conference play. The series, which marks the first meetings between the two teams on the diamond, begins Thursday.
