SFA Powers Way To Third Straight Series Win
April 24, 2010
NACOGDOCHES, Texas - The Lumberjacks pounded out 13 hits that included a pair of home runs in taking its second straight win over McNeese State on Saturday at Jaycees Field, putting itself into sole possession of second place in the Southland Conference race.
Garrett Smith and Bobby Loveless each homered for the `Jacks (26-11, 13-6 Southland) and were two of five SFA hitters that finished with a pair of hits off McNeese (20-18, 10-10 Southland) left-handers Phil Parcell and Tyler Davis.
SFA got all 10 of its runs in the middle innings of the game, putting together a pair of four-run frames in the fourth and fifth innings to pull away from the Pokes, playing solid defense behind a trio of pitchers.
Jared West again worked around a slew of walks, going 5.2 innings while allowing six hits and three runs to go with his five walks and one strikeout. But the `Jacks turned a pair of double plays behind him after turning four in his start last week against Texas A&M-Corpus Christi and got the benefit of a call on an appeal play on a sacrifice fly in the third inning to keep him out of major trouble and push his record to 3-1.
Parcell only made it through 3.2 innings for the Cowboys and took his first loss of the season, while Cory Ochs earned his first save of the season by throwing the final three innings for SFA with three strikeouts and just one run allowed.
The Pokes took advantage of a leadoff walk in the first to get an early 1-0 lead on an RBI single by Jordan Venable, but the `Jacks threatened in each of the next three innings before finally breaking through and taking the lead in the bottom of the fourth.
SFA got to business quickly in that frame, putting runners on second and third with no outs after a McNeese State error and a double by Bo Coffman. Riley Huble then singled to left field to drive in a pair and three batters later Smith shot a single up the middle to plate the first two of his four RBI on the day and give SFA a 4-1 lead against Parcell.
After Jace Peterson grounded into a double play to end the McNeese half of the fifth, SFA went right back to work with Coffman and Priest each getting hits to start the inning. Jordan Lewis then made it 5-1 with a single off of Davis' glove and Michael Haynes picked up an RBI one batter later when he plated Coffman with a sacrifice fly. Smith followed that run with a two-run homer to left-center field that broke the game wide open at 8-1.
The Cowboys chased West from the hill in the sixth with a pair of runs on a wild pitch and an RBI single, but SFA answered those two runs with Loveless' sixth home run of the year in its half of the inning off of Davis.
Cory Ochs then came on in relief of Brett Higginbotham after back-to-back doubles resulted in a pair of runs for the Cowboys in the seventh, and only allowed a solo home run to Andy Riche' on the first pitch of the top of the ninth during his three innings of work in closing out the game.
The `Jacks will go for the series sweep on Sunday in a 1:00 p.m. game at Jaycees Field. Junior Justin Braddock is the scheduled starter for SFA against sophomore righty Jaden Dillon for McNeese State.
