SFA Takes Series From UTA
April 29, 2012
NACOGDOCHES, Texas - For the second straight day the `Jacks got a solid starting pitching and a shutdown effort from its bullpen, scoring just enough to score a 3-1 win over UT Arlington in the series finale on Sunday at Jaycees Field.
The win marked the sixth consecutive season in which the `Jacks (18-26, 11-13 SLC) have won the season's series against UTA (26-18, 14-10 SLC) and gives SFA its first win in the final game of a series this season.
Colton Eubanks snapped a string of four consecutive losing decisions with a stellar effort, surrendering just one run on five hits in six innings in moving to 4-5 on the year. He struck out four and walked just a pair before handing over the reins to the bullpen with Cory Ochs delivering two scoreless frames to set up Alex Moshier, who allowed a base runner before converting his seventh save on the year.
Michael Oberto made just his second start of the year for the Mavs, who fell out of a tie for second place in the Southland with the loss, and was solid himself in allowing just two runs on five hits in five innings of work while taking the loss.
Freddy Villalobos and Jarid Scarafiotti each had a pair of singles, while Scarafiotti, Bobby Loveless and Chris Hernandez all picked up an RBI. Each of SFA's eight hits went for just one base, marking the first time this season SFA has won a game without recording at least one extra-base hit.
SFA had to play from behind early on as the Mavs staked Oberto to a 1-0 lead with a run in the top of the third inning when Preston Morrow singled off of Eubanks' glove with the bases loaded to bring home Phillip Incaviglia who head led off the inning with an infield hit of his own.
The `Jacks got that run back in the bottom of the fourth when Villalobos scored the first of his two runs on the day on a two-out single to left field by Hernandez after leading off the inning himself with a sure single up the middle
Meanwhile, Eubanks retired 10 of the final 13 hitters he faced before being put in position for the win when the `Jacks scratched across another run in the bottom of the sixth. Villalobos and Dozier each singled to open the inning and after the bases were loaded when the Mavs misplayed an attempted sacrifice bunt, Loveless brought in Villalobos with a sacrifice fly to deep right-center field. Lefty reliever then got Hernandez to ground into a double play, but the `Jacks still held a slim 2-1 lead.
Ochs then silenced the UTA bats in the seventh and eighth before the `Jacks added an insurance run in for Moshier in the bottom of the eighth on an RBI single up the middle from Scarafiotti with one down to score Rene' Moreda.
That was enough for Moshier, who got a foul out and a strikeout before walking Ryan Walker in the ninth. But the senior responded by getting pinch hitter Jake Pinchback to hit a routine comebacker to the mound for the game's final out to secure the victory.
The `Jacks do not hit the field again until Friday when they open up a three-game series at Southeastern Louisiana at Pat Kennelly Diamond
