NACOGDOCHES, Texas - The Stephen F. Austin Lumberjack baseball team was tagged for three big innings by No. 13 TCU, falling 14-4 on Tuesday night at Jaycees Field.
The Horned Frogs (31-13), making their first trip to Nacogdoches, Texas, since the 1992 season, scored five runs on SFA (17-27) in the opening frame, adding four in the top of the sixth and five in the top of the ninth to put the game out of reach. TCU's Jordan Kipper picked up the win to run his record to 7-2.
The `Jacks we held to six hits in the loss, as no SFA batter recorded more than one hit. Senior Mackenzie Handel made the most of his hit, belting his Southland Conference leading 10th homerun on a solo shot to open the bottom of the fourth.
Senior Zach Marberry hit a pinch-hit triple in the sixth, the first of his career, which led to a run on a sac fly from junior Kyle Thornell. Matthew Dickey, Brett Thornell, Conner Fikes and Nick Ramos, all singled.
Junior Halden Maynard took the loss to fall to 0-3 on the season. Maynard allowed four runs, all earned, on two walks and two hit by pitch over a third of an inning. Senior Justin Hunsaker was one of two SFA arms to blank TCU, logging one and a third innings pitched in relief. Freshman Torin Hickman pitched a scoreless eighth, picking up one strikeout.
The `Jacks scored two runs in the bottom of the eighth, as Brett Thornell and Ramos each picked up an RBI. The first three SFA batters reached before Thornell delivered senior Gevon Jackson on a sac fly to center field. Handel came in two batters later on a single up the middle from Ramos to cut it to 9-4, before the Horned Frogs added five in the ninth.
The `Jacks will head to Sam Houston State for a three-game SLC series beginning Friday.
