SFA Weathers Storm To Edge Sam Houston
May 1, 2010
HUNTSVILLE, Texas - The Lumberjacks gave up an eight-run fourth inning before rallying to score six runs in the final three frames to win a wild 14-13 game over Sam Houston on Saturday, clinching its fourth consecutive series win.
SFA (29-12, 15-7 Southland) pounded out 18 hits against three Bearkat (17-27, 9-14 Southland) pitchers, but the Bearkats had plenty of offense of its own with 14 hits - eight of which came in the fourth inning.
For the second straight night Ryan Priest led the offensive onslaught with four RBI, including an early three-run home run in the first inning off of Bearkat starter Brandon Kimbrel. Riley Huble took advantage of his start behind the plate as well, driving in four runs of his on with a 3-for-5 afternoon.
But those were not the only bats on fire on Saturday, with six `Jacks picking up multiple hits and every starter picking up at least one.
Brent Powers took the loss in relief for the Bearkats, falling to 1-4 on the season.
Early on it looked as though SFA would run away with the win as the `Jacks jumped on Kimbrel for a 6-1 lead in the first three innings with three runs in both the first and third frames.
The `Jacks pushed the lead to 8-1 with a pair of runs off of reliever Justin Jackson in the top of the fourth on an RBI hit from Priest and one of six Bearkat errors on the day, but the `Kats then erupted in its half of the fourth offensively for eight runs on eight hits to take a 9-8 lead.
Mark Hudson led off with what seemed to be a harmless solo home run, but the Bearkats then followed with three more singles and a walk before SFA was able to record on out. SFA went through three pitchers in the inning before Oates was able to get the `Jacks out of the inning with strikeouts of both Tyler Jones and Tyler Fiebrich.
Sam Houston pushed the lead to 10-8 with an unearned run in the sixth before the `Jacks began their comeback. Darren Crabtree delivered a two-out RBI single to score Huble from second in the seventh to trim the lead to 10-9. Oates shut down the `Kats in the bottom of the seventh before the SFA offense completed the comeback one inning later. Consecutive singles from Garrett Smith and Tanner Hines started the rally before Bobby Loveless delivered the game-tying hit with a single to center field that scored Hines with one out. Two batters later Huble put the `Jacks out in front with a bases-loaded single through the left side that scored a pair of runs to put SFA up 12-10 and get West out of the pen.
West put a couple of runners on in the bottom of the eighth before working out of a bases-loaded jam by getting a ground out from Braeden Riley.
Jarid Scarafiotti and Loveless each tacked on insurance RBIs in the top of the ninth against Powers, and they proved to be necessary as the Bearkats made things interesting in their half of the ninth.
Sam Houston pushed across three runs in the ninth on RBIs from Ryan Mooney and Fiebrich, but West was able to strike out Jessie Plumlee on three straight pitches for the final out with the tying run on base.
The `Jacks and `Kats will wrap up the weekend series on Sunday with a 1:00 p.m. start scheduled. Justin Braddock will get the ball for the `Jacks, opposite a starter to be determined for Sam Houston.
