HUNSTVILLE, Texas – Sophomore Kyle Thornell knocked his fifth homerun of the season, with a two-run shot in the fourth inning, but Sam Houston State completed the series sweep in a 16-7 win over the Stephen F. Austin Lumberjack baseball team on Sunday afternoon at Don Sanders Stadium.
SFA (17-30, 8-16 SLC) was held to six hits, as no ‘Jack recorded a multi-hit game against SHSU (34-14, 16-8 SLC). Both Kyle and Brett Thornell collected two RBI in the loss, as Ricardo Sanchez, Gevon Jackson, Matthew Dickey, and Dan O’Neill, also hit safely. Freshman Will Vest did not record an at bat, walking twice.
Junior Tyler Wiedenfeld (1-2) was saddled with the loss, allowing six runs over the first inning and a third. The trio of Fabian Arcizo, Justin Hunsaker and Chris Hassold, combined for four scoreless innings out of the pen.
SFA was held to three runs over the first six innings, with a fielder’s choice RBI from Sanchez in the top of the third and Kyle Thornell’s homer in the fourth, as the Bearkats took a 16-3 lead on the ‘Jacks through six innings.
SFA turned in a four-run seventh to cut it to 16-7, but could not scratch anymore across in the later frames. With the bases loaded, freshman Brandon Smith walked and senior Zach Marberry reached on a hit by pitch to deliver two, before Brett Thornell singled into left field to plate two more.
The ‘Jacks will next return to Jaycees Field to close out their home schedule. SFA will host Nicholls State in a three-game series beginning May 9. The series finale on May 11 will serve as Senior Day, with a ceremony before first pitch.
