SAN MARCOS, Texas -
Lance Luetge and the Stephen F. Austin bats led the Lumberjacks past the Texas State Bobcats in a seven-inning 11-0 win Sunday afternoon in San Marcos. Three SFA home runs powered the Lumberjacks to seven of the 11 runs as Noel Trevino, Kevin Croft and Chris Smith each hit one. It was the second time in the three-game series that a game was run-ruled, as the tables were turned Friday. The win snaps the Lumberjacks' three-game drought and sends their overall record to 26-23 overall and 13-11 in Southland Conference play. Texas State falls to 32-16 overall and is now 17-7 in league action.
The Lumberjacks put up an early three-run lead in the top of the second inning off two home runs. Noel Trevino first went yard over the left field wall before Jeff Brewer was issued a walk. Kevin Croft then came in and drove home Brewer on a home run to left center.
Brewer scored again in the top of the seventh on a double from Justin Long that put Kevin Croft on third to extend the Lumberjacks' lead to 4-0. Steven Hill was then issued his second intentional walk of the day to load the bases for Chris Smith. Smith hit his fourth home run and first grand slam of his Lumberjack career to put SFA ahead, 8-0. After the home run, Jared Pitts and David Jeans were issued back-to-back walks. They advanced a base when Trevino grounded out to the pitcher for the second out of the inning and ended up scoring when Brewer hit a single to right field. Brewer advanced to second on the throw and scored on Croft's single to right field. At the end of the eight-run inning, the Lumberjacks had an 11-0 inning.
Going into the bottom of the seventh, Luetge had only given up two hits to the Bobcats. Aaron Garza led off reaching safely after Brewer committed a throwing error from shortstop. Garza reached second when Paul Goldschmidt grounded out to second base. Then with two outs, Luetge walked Elliott Babcock to reach the bases. Luetge saved himself the shutout by striking out Casey Guest to earn his seventh win of the season. Luetge struck out six and walked two in the outing.
Croft was a perfect 3-for-3 with three RBI and two runs scored. Brewer was 2-for-3 with two RBI and three runs scored. Smith had only one hit, but the home run was his first since Feb. 25. His four RBI led the Lumberjacks.
The Lumberjacks return to action Friday at Texas-Arlington for a three-game Southland Conference series.
