SFA Wins Wild One In Walk-Off Error

NACOGDOCHES, Texas –The Stephen F. Austin Lumberjack baseball team picked up a 4-3 win over Nicholls State on an error at home plate with the bases loaded in the bottom of the ninth on Friday night at Jaycees Field.
Tied 3-3, freshmen Will Vest and Conner Fikes opened the bottom frame with a walk and single to left center to spur the call to John Satriano out of the pen for the Colonels (27-24, 16-9 SLC). SFA (18-30, 9-16 SLC) then got a walk from sophomore Matthew Dickey to load the bases, before a fielder’s choice yielded the lone out of the inning. Senior Zach Marberry reached on a fielder’s choice one batter later, as NICH catcher Christian Correa dropped the ball on the throw home allowing Fikes to score the winning run.
Juniors Dillon Mangham and Cameron Gann (5-1) combined to hold the Colonels to three hits on the night, tying the staff’s season low set against UT-Martin (Mar. 1). Gann picked up his first win since Mar. 29 against Central Arkansas, logging the final two frames, allowing just one hit and two unearned runs in 10 batters faced. The native of Crandall, Texas, struck out two and issued two walks.
Mangham kept NICH at bay for seven innings, allowing one run on two hits and fanning six, to take the no decision and lower his ERA to a cool 2.42.
The ‘Jacks were limited to six hits, but he made the most of them as Fikes led all batters with two singles in a 2-for-4 performance. Fikes also finished with a RBI and run scored. Seniors Mackenzie Handel and Ricardo Sanchez joined Dickey and Vest with one hit.
After being tagged for one run in the opening frame, Mangham dictated the Colonels at bats over the next six innings. With one out and two runners on in the top of the second, Mangham retired 12 consecutive batters, as the SFA plated one run in the third and two in the fourth to take a 3-1 lead.
Dickey walked and advanced around to third base on a single down the right field line from Sanchez with one out in the bottom of the third. Handel later delivered Dickey with a two-out RBI single to the shortstop.
Sophomore Kyle Thornell opened the bottom of the fourth with a hit by pitch, before the ‘Jacks got three consecutive singles from Vest, Fikes and Dickey to score two runs.
NICH plated two unearned runs in the top of the eighth to tie the game 3-3.
SFA will go for the series win on Saturday against the Colonels, pitting senior Kevin Bishop against Grant Borne in a 2:00 p.m. first pitch.
