NACOGDOCHES, Texas - The Stephen F. Austin Lumberjack baseball team rallied to score three runs in the bottom of the ninth, but was unable to sustain the momentum in a 5-3 loss in 11 innings to Nicholls State on Saturday afternoon at Jaycees Field.
Sophomore Matthew Dickey and seniors Ricardo Sanchez and Mackenzie Handel all singled to load the bases for SFA (18-31, 9-16 SLC) in the bottom frame. Freshman Nick Ramos drove in Dickey on a single through the right side, before sophomore Kyle Thornell delivered Sanchez on a pinch-hit sac fly to center field to make it 3-2. Junior Dan O'Neill then kept the game alive, scoring pinch runner Brandon Smith on a fielder's choice up the middle to tie 3-3.
Both the `Jacks and NICH (28-24, 17-9 SLC) turned in quiet plate appearances in the 10th inning, before the Colonels scored two runs in the top of the 11th to even the series at one game apiece.
Sanchez led SFA at the plate, turning in a 2-for-5 performance with a run scored. Seven `Jacks turned in a hit in total, as Fikes was the only SFA batter with an extra base hit, finishing 1-for-3 with a double. The `Jacks were out hit 12-8.
Junior Fabian Arcizo (1-1) took the loss, allowing one run on two hits in an inning of relief. Senior Kevin Bishop settled for a no decision, limiting NICH to two runs (one earned) over a career-high seven and a third innings pitched in his final start at Jaycees Field. The native of College Station, Texas, recorded one strikeout and issued just two walks in 29 batters faced.
Bishop retired seven consecutive and nine of his first 10 Colonel batters faced to open the game and blank NICH through three innings.
Leo Vargas was hit by a pitch to open the fourth inning and eventually came around to score on small-ball tactics executed by the Colonels to take a 1-0 lead. Keith Cormier advanced Vargas on a bunt single, before both moved up a sac bunt from Seth Stevens. Vargas scored one batter later on a sac fly.
NICH added one run in both the eighth and ninth innings to take a 3-0 lead on SFA entering the final frame in regulation.
The `Jacks will go for the series win on Sunday in a 1:00 p.m. first pitch behind senior Kyle Cross on Senior Day. SFA will recognize its nine seniors - Kevin Bishop, Kyle Cross, Rick Cruz, Mackenzie Handel, Justin Hunsaker, Zach Marberry, Gevon Jackson, Ricardo Sanchez, and Brett Thornell - and Fabian Arcizo (redshirt/December graduation) in a ceremony before the game.
