SLC Releases Preseason Polls
Jan. 22, 2009
FRISCO, Texas - The Southland Conference released its 2009 preseason picks on Wednesday, with the Lumberjacks picked to finish 10th in both the coaches and sports information director's polls.
Two-time defending SLC regular season champion UTSA was picked atop both polls, receiving five first-place votes in each. Texas State earned four first-place votes in the coach's poll and two in the SID poll and are picked to finish second in the coaches and third in the SID.
Sam Houston was picked to finish in a tie with Texas State in the coaches poll after receiving two first-place votes, but was slated to finish fifth in the SID poll despite receiving three first-place votes. Lamar and Northwestern State were the other two picked in the top five in both polls, while the 6-12 spots were identical in both polls in order of UTA, Southeastern La., Texas A&M-Corpus Christi, Central Arkansas, SFA, McNeese State and Nicholls.
The 10th spot was good to the two teams picked in those spots in 2008 as Texas A&M-Corpus Christi made the conference tournament after being picked 10th in the SID poll and UTA did the same after being picked 10th in the coaches poll. In 2007 SFA earned the No. 6 seed in the conference tournament after being picked 10th in the SID poll.
This season SFA will sport a pair of seniors at the top of the rotation to begin the year in Erich Lehmann and Erik Gregersen, who was selected in the 36th round by the Cincinnati Reds in last year's MLB Draft. Senior closer Richard Folmer also returns after picking up five wins and five saves last year, and senior Sean Meyers is back as well after hitting .333 with four home runs and 31 RBI as a junior.
SFA opens up the season Feb. 21 against Mississippi Valley State at the ULM Warhawk Classic. The first home game for the 'Jacks is slated for Feb. 24 at Jaycees Field when SFA will host the Houston Cougars.
