NACOGDOCHES, Texas - The Stephen F Austin Lumberjack baseball team, after having its initial home game postponed due to inclement weather, will play its first game of the 2014 season at Jaycees Field on Thursday afternoon against No. 26 Texas Tech.
SFA (3-4) will send junior righty Halden Maynard to the mound against the Red Raiders. Maynard has appeared in one game one the season, logging a third of an inning pitched against Incarnate Word at the UTA Invitational over opening weekend.
The `Jacks, who did not play their game Tuesday, Feb. 25, due to rain, are coming off a hard fought weekend in Tuscaloosa where SFA went 1-2, taking No. 21/27 Alabama into extra innings in two of their three games. The `Jacks beat UA 2-1 in 13 innings in the series opener. SFA also took the Tide in the tenth in the series finale, but fell 3-2.
Texas Tech is 7-1 through its first eight games entering the midweek contest, reeling off seven straight since dropping a 1-0 decision to No. 3 Indiana on opening day. The Red Raiders are led offensively by senior outfielder Adam Kirsch's .370 batting average.
SFA is 1-1 all-time against TTU, with both games coming in the 2007 season. The two teams each took one game, playing on consecutive days to open the season. The Red Raiders took a 4-3 victory over the `Jacks in 11 innings on opening day, before SFA responded with 2-1 victory to split the series.
The Thursday game is the first of a three-game series with TTU, with a two-game return trip to Lubbock on Mar. 18-19.
Outfielders Matthew Dickey and Ricardo Sanchez lead the way for SFA offensively, hitting .334 and .333, respectively. Dickey went 5-for-14 over the weekend in Tuscaloosa with a double, while Sanchez collected three hits across the series with Alabama.
Fans can buy tickets at the gate at Jaycees Field. Adults are $5 for adults and $3 for children ages 9-18. Children under 8 years old get in free. SFA students get in free with their student ID. Chairback seats are $8.
