SFA Drops 5-4 Heartbreaker in Home Opener
Stephen F. Austin was one out away from a memorable home opener, holding a 4-3 lead on 26th-ranked Texas Tech in the top of the ninth inning. But the Red Raiders connected on a two-RBI double, then withstood a final Lumberjack rally to hand SFA a 5-4 loss at Jaycees Field.
Stephen F. Austin embarks on a five-game road swing, beginning with a two-game series against Big 12 foe Texas Tech in Lubbock. Tuesday’s game gets underway at 6:30 p.m. with Wednesday’s tilt scheduled for a 2 p.m. first pitch.
SFA in 2014
SFA enters the week 8-9 overall and 1-2 in Southland Conference play after dropping the opening series against McNeese State. The ‘Jacks are 3-5 on the road this season but have already notched a pair of victories over teams that qualified for the 2013 NCAA tournament (Alabama and Wichita State).
Heading into this week’s series against Texas Tech, Dan O’Neill leads SFA in batting average (.364) thanks to a productive Sunday against McNeese State. Matthew Dickey has the most at-bats in the leadoff spot for the ‘Jacks (73), hitting .329 with 24 hits and six RBI. Mackenzie Handel leads the team in both RBIs (11) and homeruns (2), batting .281 as the designated hitter with Joseph Olson right behind at 10 RBIs.
Scouting the Red Raiders
Texas Tech enters the two-game series with a 16-5 record on the year, including a 13-1 record at Rip Griffin Park, but lost two of its last three at Baylor last weekend. Outfielder Adam Kirsch has had the hottest bat for the Red Raiders, hitting .352 on the season with 17 RBI, followed by infielder Eric Gutierrez’s .343 average with 11 RBI.
Tuesday’s series opener’s starter for SFA is slated to be freshman LHP Patrick Ledet (0-0, 0.00 ERA, 5.1 IP) going against right-hander Matt Withrow (1-1, 5.74 ERA, 15.2 IP) for Texas Tech. On Wednesday, senior right-hander Kyle Cross (0-3, 4.23 ERA, 27.2 IP) is expected to start for the ‘Jacks with left-hander Dylan Dusek (2-0, 1.84 ERA, 14.2 IP) taking to the hill for the Red Raiders.
SFA and Tech have met three times previously with the Red Raiders holding a 2-1 lead in the all-time series, including a 5-4 victory at Jaycees Field in the 2014 home opener. The ‘Jacks held a 4-3 lead with two outs in the top of the ninth against the Red Raiders on February 27th before a TTU rally in the ninth gave Tech the victory.
Last Time Out
SFA opened up its 2014 Southland Conference schedule with a 5-1 victory over McNeese State on Friday, thanks to a complete game, one-run performance by Cameron Gann, racing out to a 4-0 lead through the first two innings. The ‘Jacks and Cowboys then staged a 13-inning contest that spanned two days due to rain, won by McNeese State 5-4. The Cowboys then opened up a 10-3 lead in the final game of the series, holding off a ninth-inning rally by SFA to win the rubber game 10-7.
Following the two-game series in Lubbock, SFA makes the trek east to Natchitoches for a three-game set against SLC rival Northwestern State, beginning Friday at 6:30 p.m. Game two against the Demons is slated for Saturday at 2 p.m. before the series finale Sunday at 1 p.m.
