The Stephen F. Austin Lumberjack baseball team returns to Jaycees Field, after five games on the road, to begin a four-game homestand at Jaycees Field. The 'Jacks welcome Dallas Baptist to Nacogdoches for a 6:30 p.m. first pitch on Tuesday night.
SFA in 2014
SFA enters the week 10-12 overall and 2-4 in Southland Conference play after dropping its series at Northwestern State over the weekend.
The 'Jacks are 4-3 at home this season, with wins over Tennessee-Martin (3) and McNeese State (1).
Heading into this non-conference meeting with DBU, sophomore Matthew Dickey leads SFA in batting average (.354) and stolen bases (7-13). Dickey has gone 29-for-82 in 18 starts.
Senior Mackenzie Handel leads the team in slugging percentage (.577) and homeruns (5). The long-ball game for the native of Chandler, Ariz., also has him atop the team and second in the league in RBI (21). Handel is currently holding a .321/.577/.412 (avg./slug./obp.) split,
Senior Zach Marberry leads the team and is tied for the SLC mark in doubles (12). Marberry is currently third on the team in batting average (.329) and second in both slugging percentage (.500) and on-base percentage (.422).
Scouting the Patriots
DBU enters the week having dropped its first series at home, after back-to-back defeats in the first pair of games from the weekend series versus Utah Valley University. The first two losses of the series extended the Patriot's season-long losing streak to three games before DBU snapped the skid with a 4-1 victory in the series finale.
Senior Mike Wesolowski remains the top batter on the squad, with a .318 batting average and 28 hits on the season. The first baseman combined for three hits this past weekend, including a multi-hit display in Sunday's triumph. He also scored twice in Friday's and Sunday's contest, boosting his season total to 21 for second on the club and ranks third in the Missouri Valley Conference.
Tuesday's series starters will pit SFA's is slated to be sophomore LHP Chris Hassold (0-1, 4.15 ERA, 8.2 IP) against Patriot senior RHP Cody Beam (0-1, 9.00 ERA, 1.0 IP).
The 'Jacks and DBU have met 12 times previously with the Patriots holding a 9-3 lead in the all-time series, with the two teams splitting the season series in 2013 (1-1).
Last Time Out
SFA dropped its second conference series of the year with a 5-3 loss to Northwestern State on at Brown-Stroud Field on Sunday. The 'Jacks, despite being limited to six hits, scratched across three runs in the loss to the Demons. Freshman Nick Ramos led the way for the SFA with a 2-for-4 outing, with a walk and run scored, while seniors Gevon Jackson, Zach Marberry, Ricardo Sanchez and Brett Thornell all collected one hit on the day.
Following the midweek tilt, the 'Jacks will host Central Arkansas for a three-game series beginning Friday, Mar. 28.
