The Stephen F. Austin Lumberjack baseball team held on to pick up its eighth victory of the season Tuesday afternoon beating Texas-Pan American, 5-3, at Jaycees Field. The 'Jacks are now 8-32 (.200) on the season, while the Broncs fall to 19-23 (.452).
Freshman pitcher Erich Lehman pitched five innings of shutout ball to record his fifth victory of the season. Lehman surrendered only six hits while striking out four batters. It was a total team effort offensively as eight different Lumberjacks recorded a hit on the afternoon. Junior David Jeans went a perfect 3-for-3 at the plate, while junior Chase Sadler was 3-for-4 with an RBI and a run scored. Classmate Jason Wilson got the start in right field and went 1-for-2 with two RBIs and a run scored.
SFA jumped on the scoreboard first with three in the second on Wilson's single. The 'Jacks added a run in the third and another in the sixth to take a commanding 5-0 lead. The Broncs answered with two runs in the seventh inning but freshman pitcher Russ Fornea came on in relief to quite the rally.
UTPA made one last rally in the top of the ninth loading the bases with only one out, but once again the Lumberjacks' bullpen came on to quite the rally. Sophomore David Miller came on in the ninth and surrendered two hits and a walk, but struck out two batters to preserve the victory and get the save.
The Lumberjacks return to action Wednesday to close out the two-game series against Texas-Pan American. The game against the Broncs is slated to begin at 3 p.m. from Jaycees Field.
