FRISCO, Texas - SFA senior outfielder Garrett Smith has been named the Southland Conference hitter of the week, the league office announced on Monday.

It is the first honor of Smith's career, and the second time a Lumberjack has been named the league's top bat after Bryson Myles earned the honor on March 21.

There were a number of offensive standouts for SFA last week, but none with a more balanced line than the Smith. The senior center fielder was a key catalyst in the `Jacks picking up four road wins last week, including the last three in run-rule fashion at Texas A&M-Corpus Christi.

Smith finished with four multi-hit games, scored at least two runs in each contest and reached base at least four times in three of the four games on the week. All told, Smith finished with three doubles and three triples for a gaudy 1.267 slugging percentage for the week and found his way on base in more than three quarters of his plate appearances, totaling out for a 2.029 OPS for the week.

He had at least one extra-base hit in all four games on the week, including a triple in each of SFA's three wins over the Islanders, helping keep the `Jacks in a tie for first place atop the SLC.

The Carthage, Texas, senior opened the week with a 3-for-4 day at Arkansas-Pine Bluff that included a pair of doubles, two RBI and three runs scored. He followed that outing with a modest 2-for-5 day with a triple and two runs scored in a series-opening win over Texas A&M-Corpus Chrsiti.

Smith then reached base in five of his six plate appearances in the middle game of the series, driving home a pair and picking up a pair of extra-base hits before going a perfect 3-for-3 with three RBI and three runs scored in the series finale.

He finished the week by raising his batting average more than 40 points and currently is second on the team in both hits (45) and RBI (31).
