MIAMI, Fla. - Antonio Bosticpoured in a career-high 23 points and the Stephen F. Austin Lumberjacks led by as much as 22 points before holding on for a 69-60 win over Florida International on Saturday afternoon at US Century Arena.
The `Jacks (2-0) got its first road win of the season by building a 16-point lead at the break and hit 59.6 percent from the floor to overcome 23 turnovers on the day. Bostic had 17 of his points in the first half, canning three 3-point buckets and was joined in double figures by Jacob Parkerand Taylor Smith.
Parker had a breakout game with a career-high 13 points to go with five rebounds, while Smith filled up the stat sheet with 12 points, nine rebounds and five blocks in 36 minutes of work.
In all, the Lumberjacks outrebounded FIU (0-2) 34-29 and managed to avenge a 58-56 win in Nacogdoches a year ago, while moving to 2-0 for the fourth time in the past six seasons.
Tymell Murphy led FIU with 17 points, while Malik Smith added 16 for the Golden Panthers.
It took SFA less than eight minutes to build an eight-point lead, but it was a 14-0 run for the `Jacks that lasted until the 6:27 mark that opened things up for SFA with a 31-16 advantage before cruising into the break with a 16-point advantage on the strength of 62.5 percent shooting.
SFA kept FIU at a distance for the majority of the second half, building its lead to as much as 22 points with under 10 minutes to play on a layup from Ice Asortsethat pushed the lead to 56-34; however, FIU then started to chip away at the lead thanks to a bevy of SFA turnovers and eventually getting as close as 13 points with just 2:33 remaining.
The `Jacks will return to action on Tuesday when they host Jarvis Christian at William R. Johnson Coliseum before traveling to take on the Tulsa Golden Hurricane on Saturday.
