FRISCO, Texas - Stephen F. Austin forward Taylor Smith has been named the Southland Conference Men's Basketball Player of the Week for the second consecutive week, the league office announced Tuesday.
SFA played just one game last week, but Smith's performance more than stood out. The senior post man scored his second double-double in as many games, putting up career highs in both points and rebounds in SFA's 67-56 win at Texas A&M-Corpus Christi in what was the league opener for both teams.
Smith hit 10 of his 14 shots from the floor for 25 points to raise his league-leading field goal percentage to .664 and pulled down a career-best 14 boards. Those numbers raised his season numbers to 15.7 points per game and 8.3 rebounds per game.
He currently leads the SLC in not only field goal percentage, but also blocks per game (2.6 bpg), while ranking in the league's top five in both scoring and rebounding.
With Smith's pair of honors, along with Antonio Bostic's weekly honor after SFA's win at FIU, the `Jacks have secured three weekly awards from the SLC this year, tops in the league.
