SFA Looks To Continues Run At Home
Jan. 29, 2014
NACOGDOCHES, Texas - The Stephen F. Austin men's basketball team returns to William R. Johnson Coliseum after five road games looking to continue its winning ways under first-year head coach Brad Underwood.
The Lumberjacks (18-2, 7-0 SLC), who led the nation with their 26-game home court win streak upon their departure, took over another streak while outside Nacogdoches - consecutive road wins. SFA knocked off Houston Baptist, Texas A&M - Corpus Christi, Northwestern State, Oral Roberts and Central Arkansas, over a 17-day period to take over the national lead with eight-straight road victories and improve to 10-2 away from home on the season. The 10 road wins also leads the nation for most road wins thus far, while the 26 consecutive homes wins for the `Jacks currently ranks second behind only No. 16/17 Duke.
SFA also holds the fifth longest overall win streak, including both home and road games, in the nation at 15-straight. The 15 wins represents the third longest win streak in program history and is one shy of tying the second longest since basketball started being played back in 1925. The `Jacks won 16 games in the 1971-72 season. The program's all-time mark is 29-straight, set during the 1969-70 campaign.
Underwood continues to extend his first-year success with 18 wins, already the program's all-time winningest head coach in their first season at SFA. With the 74-58 victory at Northwestern State (Jan. 16), Underwood passed Glen Rose (1948) and John O. Stephens (1952), who both recorded 15 wins back in their respective first seasons.
The success for Underwood and the `Jacks thus far has garnered the attention of two mid-major polls and one national poll. The `Jacks currently rank seventh in the latest CollegeInsider.com Mid-Major Poll and ninth in the Mid-Major Madness Power 15 Poll. SFA also received one vote in the latest USA Today Coaches Poll for a second-straight week, a feat the 'Jacks accomplished last season during their title run for the first time since the 2007-08 campaign.
One of 351 NCAA Division I men's basketball teams in the country, SFA currently ranks in the top 10 in both turnover margin (8th-5.3) and win percentage (T6th-90.0). The `Jacks also rank 26th in scoring defense (62.3), tied for 26th in scoring margin (12.9) and are 40th in assist-turnover ratio (1.35).
SFA will look to extend its current win streaks with two home games in Week 13. The `Jacks will play ACU on Thursday, Jan. 30, followed by Incarnate Word on Saturday, Feb. 1. The meeting with the two opponents is the first as conference foes, while the UIW game also represents the first meeting on the hardwood in either program's history.
