FRISCO, Texas - Stephen F. Austin forward Taylor Smith has been named the Southland Conference Men's Basketball Player of the Week, the league office announced Monday.
Smith was an integral part in SFA picking up a pair of wins on the week, including its signature non-conference win of the season last Tuesday at Oklahoma.
Smith continued his impressive senior season with another stellar week, leading SFA to a pair of wins and helping the Lumberjacks reclaim sole possession of first place atop the conference standings. The senior from Schertz, Texas (Clements H.S.), averaged 21.0 points, 7.5 rebounds and 2.0 blocks per game in wins over Central Arkansas and Oral Roberts.
He needed just 27 minutes to hit nine of 10 shots for 21 points, eight boards and three blocks in a 36-point win over Central Arkansas on Thursday. Two days later Smith went the distance, playing all 40 minutes in a 77-67 win over preseason league favorite Oral Roberts to complete a season sweep of the Golden Eagles. He pumped in 21 points in the win and pulled down seven rebounds, hitting 9 of 13 shots. He enters this week leading the nation in field-goal percentage at 70.4 percent and ranks eighth in the nation with 3.1 blocks per game.
It is the third such honor for Smith in this season and the fourth this season for the Lumberjacks, with Antonio Bostic having captured a weekly honor earlier this year after SFA's win at FIU.
Smith and the `Jacks will return to action on Thursday, Feb. 14, when they play at Nicholls in the first of four consecutive road games. Thursday's contest will be aired live on ESPN3.
