NACOGDOCHES, Texas - The Stephen F. Austin men's basketball team, with three home games remaining, looks to extend their tie for the nation's longest active home court winning streak with "Cram The Coliseum" on Saturday, Feb. 22, against Northwestern State.
First-year head coach Brad Underwood and the Lumberjacks (24-2, 13-0 SLC) return to William R. Johnson Coliseum after picking up a pair of road wins over Lamar and Sam Houston State in Week 15. Saturday's win over SHSU gave SFA sole possession of the nation's longest active road win streak at 10 games, before No. 3 Wichita State retied them later the same Saturday evening (Feb. 15), and the nation's most road wins on the season with 12 overall.
With a share of the nation's longest home win streak at 30-straight victories, the `Jacks have continued to garner national attention, remaining third in CollegeInsider.com's Mid-Major Top 25 poll, the highest ranking in program history, and moving up to sixth in the Mid-Major Madness Power 15.
For a fifth-straight week SFA is receiving at least one vote in the USA Today Coaches Poll, now with seven votes. After their first appearance of the season in Week 15, the `Jacks also continue to receive votes in the Associated Press' Top 25, now with eight. SFA received votes in both polls last season and in the 2007-08 year.
The `Jacks, who haven't lost since Nov. 23, have continued to rank with elite company in several other categories, including conference play. SFA's 13-0 mark is in the same conversation with No. 1 Syracuse (12-0), No. 2 Florida (12-0), No. 3 Wichita St. (14-0) and No. 10 Saint Louis (10-0), as the only remaining school with out a loss in league play, two of which having an impact on the home win streak mark. Syracuse heads to No. 5/6 Duke for a pivotal showdown on the Blue Devils' home court, the same night as SFA's tilt with Northwestern State on Feb. 22, while Florida sits one game behind the `Jacks with 29-straight wins on their respective hardwood.
SFA's 21-straight overall wins rank third in the nation, behind Wichita St. (27) and Syracuse (25), continuing to build on the second-longest all-time streak for the `Jacks and most since the 1971-72 season (16). The program's all-time mark is 29-straight, set during the 1969-70 campaign as a member of the Lone Star Conference. The 21 consecutive wins is also the most for a Southland Conference school.
Underwood continues to extend his first-year success with 24 wins, already the program's all-time winningest head coach in their first season at SFA. With the 74-58 victory at Northwestern State back on Jan. 16, Underwood passed Glen Rose (1948) and John O. Stephens (1952), who both recorded 15 wins back in their respective first seasons.
One of 351 NCAA Division I men's basketball programs in the country, the `Jacks currently rank in the top 10 in both win percentage (3rd-92.3) and turnover margin (T6th-5.3). SFA also ranks 12th in assists per game (16.3), 13th in scoring margin (13.1), and 21st in assist-to-turnover ratio (1.43). Defensively, the `Jacks rank 22nd in scoring defense (62.1) and are 76th in scoring offense (75.2).
Other statistics of note, SFA ranks 41st in steals per game (7.6) and tied for 56th in rebounding margin (4.1).
