FRISCO, Texas - Stephen F. Austin forward Hal Bateman has been named the Southland Conference Men's Basketball Player of the Week, the league office announced Monday.
Bateman had one of his best weeks of the season, helping SFA to a pair of road wins, including a 68-60 win at Long Beach State in a BracketBusters game televised nationally on ESPNU. He scored 15 points each in wins over The Beach and rival Sam Houston State, and dished out seven assists per game to go with three steals per contest.
On Wednesday he scored 15 points to go with eight assists, seven rebounds and a pair of steals in a gritty win over the Bearkats on the road, hitting nine of 10 foul shots in the game. Two days later he hit seven of nine shots from the field, including just his second three-point basket of the year, scoring 15 points to go with six assists and four steals in SFA's eight-point win over the 49ers.
The senior from Davenport, Iowa, has scored in double figures in four of his last five games and currently leads the Southland with 6.1 assists per game.
It is the first such honor for Bateman in his career and the fifth this season for the Lumberjacks, with Antonio Bostic having captured a weekly honor earlier this year and Taylor Smith having done it three times.
Bateman and the `Jacks can now focus their attention on their biggest game of the year on Saturday in what will be a first-place showdown against Northwestern State in Nacogdoches. Tip time is set for 6:00 p.m. at William R. Johnson Coliseum.
