PLANO, Texas - The Southland Conference's leading scorer and fourth-leading rebounder, McEverett Powers, a senior at the University of Texas at San Antonio, has been named player of the year in men's basketball. He becomes the second Roadrunner to win the award in the past five years, following Roderic Hall in 1998.

Five seniors make up the first-team All-Southland Conference squad which was derived from a vote of the league's head coaches and members of the media.

Powers heads of the list of first-team performers and is joined by teammate Devin Brown on that squad. The duo rank among the top four in the league in scoring as Powers, a native of Memphis, Tenn., is tied with Steven Barber of the University of Texas at Arlington with 18.6 points per game. Brown, a senior from San Antonio, ranks fourth with 17.8 points per game. Brown is the lone repeat first-team selection and becomes the 17th player in Southland history to be named first team three times.

Joining the two Roadrunners on the first team are teammates Brian Lubeck and Wojciech Myrda of the University of Louisiana at Monroe. Lubeck finished second to Powers in player of the year voting after finishing the regular season ninth in scoring (14.9 ppg) and sixth in rebounding (7.5 rpg). Myrda, who continues to add to his NCAA career blocked shot record, is averaging 11.3 points, 7.3 rebounds and leads the nation with 5.3 blocks per game. The former high school exchange student from Rzeszow, Poland, who stands 7-feet-2-inches tall, now has 522 career blocks, taking over all-time leadership this season. His 159 blocks this season break his own Southland season record.

Rounding out the first team is Fred Gentry of McNeese State University. The DeQuincy, La., product led the Cowboys to their second consecutive Southland Conference regular-season title by averaging 10.6 points and 7.1 rebounds while leading the Southland in field goal percentage with a 60.9 percent aim.

Voted newcomer of the year was Donald Cole of Sam Houston State University, a junior transfer from Navarro (Texas) Junior College. The Port Arthur, Texas, product is fifth in scoring at 16.4 points and leads the Southland with 10.2 rebounds per game.

Stephen F. Austin State University's Steven Ozier of Freeport, Texas, is the freshman of the year. He is averaging 6.7 points and 4.7 rebounds while starting 21-of-27 games played this season. He helped the Lumberjacks reach the postseason for the first time since 1997.

After leading McNeese to a team title in his first year at the helm of the program, Tic Price has been voted coach of the year. The Cowboys have won 12 in a row under his tutelage and are 19-8 heading into postseason play.

Barber, a senior from San Antonio who also has an 18.6 scoring average, but has scored one more point (502-501) than Powers, tops the second-team selections. He is joined by newcomer Damany Hendrix of Lamar University, Jason Coleman of McNeese, SHSU's Cole, and Michael Byars-Dawson of Northwestern State University on the second team.

Third-team picks included Amir Abdur-Rahim of Southeastern Louisiana University, Percy Green of SFA, Clay Click of Southwest Texas State University, and Chauncy Bryant and Damond Williams of McNeese.
