Parker Named To USBWA All-District Team
March 11, 2014
ST. LOUIS, Mo. – Junior forward Jacob Parker was named to the U.S. Basketball Writers Association (USBWA) All-District VII team announced Tuesday morning based on voting from its national membership of 900-plus.
Parker, named the Southland Conference Player of the Year on Mar. 10, helped lead the Lumberjacks to their second consecutive Southland regular-season championship and their fourth overall in program history with a 29-2 record and perfect 18-0 record in league play. The forward from Bixby, Okla. (Bixby H.S.), averaged 14.5 points and 7.1 rebounds to pace SFA in the regular season.
Parker, among the conference leaders, enters the SLC Tournament highly ranked in several statistical categories, including second in free-throw percentage (.870), fifth in offensive rebounds (2.5), seventh in rebounding (7.1), ninth in field goal percentage (.537), 11th in scoring (14.5) and 12th in defensive rebounds (4.5). He scored in double figures in all but five of the 31 games for the ‘Jacks and scored 20 or more points five times, including a season-high 31 points at Marshall in November.
Parker has recorded nine career double-doubles, all this season, and pulled down a career-high 13 rebounds against Northwestern State in January.
His effort on the court helped SFA become the first in the Southland to navigate a perfect 18-game league schedule and is the first undefeated conference champion since Arkansas State in 1967. No team in the league’s 51-year history had gone undefeated in more than an eight-game schedule. The perfect mark in conference play for the ‘Jacks made them the third team to do so this season, joining top-ranked Florida and second-ranked Wichita State, and just the 18th team and in NCAA history to navigate a undefeated conference schedule in conference seasons of 18 games or more.
This season SFA became the first Southland team to win 29 games in the regular season, matching the 1985 Louisiana Tech team that finished 29-3 after reaching the “Sweet 16.” The ‘Jacks ran their home-court dominance to 33 consecutive games, dating back to the 2011-12 season, which is tied with No. 6/7 Duke for the best in Division I. The team’s 26-game overall win streak obliterated the former conference record of 19 set by Louisiana Tech in 1992-93 and 1993-94 and ranks second in the nation, behind only Wichita St. SFA leads the nation with 14 road wins this season and its current 12-game road win streak is tied with Wichita St. for the national lead.
Parker was joined on the all-district team by Jaye Crockett (Texas Tech), Jonathan Holmes (Texas), Cory Jefferson (Baylor), Shawn Long (Louisiana-Lafayette), Aaric Murray (Texas Southern), Nic Moore (SMU), Johnny O'Bryant (LSU), Bobby Portis (Arkansas) and Cameron Ridley (Texas).
The ‘Jacks carry their 29-2 record into this week’s conference tournament and have a chance to become the first Southland team to win 30 games, the second time SFA would do so in program history. SFA, the No. 1 seed, will not play until Friday, Mar. 14, in the semifinal game, playing the winner of the Thursday’s game in their bracket.
