NACOGDOCHES, Texas - The Stephen F. Austin men's basketball team learned their seed, opponent and destination for the 2014 NCAA Tournament on Sunday afternoon during a watch party at Fuzzy's Taco Shop in Nacogdoches. The Lumberjacks drew a No. 12 seed and will play fifth-seeded VCU in the San Diego regional on Friday.
SFA is making just its second NCAA Tournament appearance in program history. The last time the `Jacks went to the dance was in 2009, falling to then No. 3 seed Syracuse 59-44 in the South regional in Miami. SFA was a No. 14 seed in the tournament in 2009.
The postseason meeting with VCU will be the first-ever meeting between the two teams on the hardwood.
SFA enters the tournament at or still near the top in its respective win streaks. The `Jacks picked up their 27th and 28th straight victory in the 2014 Southland Conference Tournament. SFA knocked off Northwestern State in the semifinals and Sam Houston State in the championship game to earn the league's automatic berth to the NCAA Tournament.
The `Jacks closed the regular season on a 33-game home win streak, which is tied with sixth and seventh nationally-ranked Duke, who is a No. 3 seed in the tournament. SFA also finished the regular season with 14 overall road wins, which led the nation, and on a 12-game win streak away from its home court that sat second only to second-ranked Wichita State, a No. 1 seed in the big dance.
First year head coach and 2014 SLC Coach of the Year Brad Underwood continues to move up an elite list of his own with 31 wins at the helm. Underwood enters the NCAA tournament in a three-way tie for third in the NCAA's top 10 best career starts at the Division I level. Underwood is tied with Steve Prohm (Murray State - 31-2, 2012) and Jamie Dixon (Pittsburgh - 31-5, 2004).
Underwood led the `Jacks to the Southland's first 29-win regular season and first 30-plus win season with two victories in the conference tournament. Underwood and SFA also tied the most wins in a single-season in program history, matching the 1971-72 `Jacks that finished 31-3.
